In this opening concert of our Atlanta series, Skylark explores music whose poetic texts are masterworks in their own right – poems by immortal voices of Shakespeare, Byron, Whitman, Auden, and Neruda. Through readings of some of these great poems, and performances of transcendent settings from composers including Britten, Vaughan Williams, Schuman, and Mealor, Skylark will bring to life some of humanity’s greatest texts, sharing moments of beauty and inspiration that can arise from the marriage of a profound text and an inspired composer.

Skylark performs favorites from “both sides of the pond” in distinct but related styles: the English madrigal, the Sacred Harp, the English folksong, and the American Sea Shanty.  Featured prominently in the program will be a seldom performed but masterful set of folksongs by the British composer Gustav Holst, as well as classic American arrangements by the beloved Robert Shaw and Alice Parker, whose influence on the members of Skylark cannot be overstated.
